The current outcry and belated recognition of Detroit’s proud rock & roll tradition due to the White Stripes and the explosive Detroit “garage rock” scene is just the tip of the iceberg.  Long before there was even a need for “garage rock”, Detroit was the home of a thriving music scene that rivaled the much more-publicized “punk” scenes going in New York, London and Los Angeles.

The band “Flirt” was one of the leading proponents of this wave of exciting new music that sprouted from the Motor City in the late 1970’s as punk was raging in NYC and across the ocean in London.  The Flirt and their brethren like the Sillies, Romantics, Torpedoes, Pigs, and a host of others brought back the time-honored tradition of playing live original kick-ass rock & roll back to the Motor City at clubs like Bookie’s, Lili’s and the Red Carpet.  They released two records – the single “Don’t Push Me/Degenerator” on Real Records in 1978 and the 10 inch EP “Faster Than You”.

Flirt is spearheaded by the husband and wife duo of Skid Marx and Rockee Berlin.   Skid plays bass and Rockee takes care of the vocals; they have been ably supported through the years by a bevy of great musicians including the late Steve Sortor (of Mutants fame) and Thomas St. Thomas of the Sillies

The entire historical lineup of Flirt is listed below.

Their music – well, here is a sample of what the critics have said over the years:

“Street level rock from the gut of Detroit”  Detroit News

A musical powerhouse that befits the Motor City” Rock Scene

Amazing blend of Joplin and Iggy” Creem

A sultry style that would make Tina Turner look like the Singing Nun” Oakland Press
