Halloween is always one of those holidays that I love and hate at the same time. There's always a bunch of cool parties and shows to go to, but I absolutely hate to dress up for any occasion. If jeans, tennis shoes and a t-shirt were good enough for the Ramones - then they're good enough for me. Either way, I was just totally geeked about the Halloween show at the Magic Stick. It was hosted by the Ghoul, who is finally getting his due and may hopefully reappear on Detroit TV soon again. For those of you who don't remember - the Ghoul hosted a weekly show on Channels 50 & 20 where his demented brand of humor as well as incredibly bad horror movies made a profound impact on our lives. What other show encouraged viewers to send in gifts that would be blown on TV the following week?
The Magic Stick was packed and I strolled in just in time to see the Ghoul introduce one of my favorite bands - the Paybacks. Except it wasn't the Paybacks - instead it was the "Cheap Paybacks" with the band dressed up as Cheap Trick and playing all Cheap Trick covers. I have to admit that I actually saw the real Cheap Trick once and the Paybacks had me searching for the vinyl copy of the Cheap Trick debut album that's in my basement somewhere. After this great start, the Ghoul came back on and introduced the 3D Invisibles.
There is no more appropriate band than 3D to see on Halloween. After all, they always look like they should be in a monster movie and all of their songs are about horror and Sci-fi movies. This band has been around for a long time and it is always a treat to see them play here. The Ghoul then re-entered for the always-popular Halloween costume judging contest. The first contest was a Ghoul look-alike show and the world certainly need more Ghouls. This was followed by a regular costume contest after which I could finally go home and start eating all the stuff that that the neighborhood kids hadn't gotten to.
