One of the few good things about living in Detroit is that it's usually
pretty easy to see cool bands when they're on tour. (That's because most people
in Detroit think that Bob Seger & the Rolling Stones are still alive). The
good part about this cultural wasteland is that you get to see bands like L7
& the Motor Dolls in a small bar like the Shelter. The Motor Dolls are a
great 3-piece local band who deserve a lot more recognition & support, but
like many Detroit bands, find it hard to get. If you're around the area - catch
them !!! L7 had the bad luck to have their equipment break down halfway through
their set, but the Motor Dolls came to their rescue. It's hard to judge a band
when they have a 20 minute intermission, but they'll be back in May opening for
the Offspring at the State. It was great to see Mike Duffy, the local Free Press
TV (formerly music) critic, who is one of the few people in the Detroit media
that actually knows anything about the local music scene. (Therefore, the Free
Press then takes him off music & makes him cover such noteworthy events as
the latest episode of Friends (their best acting job was when they had to
pretend that Hootie & the Blowfish didn't suck). More on L7 after their May
show ......
