The
Sirens and Stanley and More….
Well, I’m almost recovered from the Stanley Cup parade and party and it’s time to get back to work. Somewhere between Game #5 on Thursday night and the last chant of “Let’s Go Wings” in Hart Plaza on Monday afternoon I found time again to check out some of Detroit’s finest bands. It all started on at the Motor City Brewing Works early on Friday evening (early being anytime before midnight) when the Sirens played a special free show.
This will be the Siren’s last show for while, so they made it extra special for us. The Brewing Works is a microbrewery located on Canfield in the Wayne State area and has been putting on great shows that are being recorded for an upcoming Ghettoblaster II compilation. These shows used to be on Sundays, but noise complaints from the neighbors have forced a change to Friday.
(There never used to be noise complaints at the Gold Dollar, but the neighbors on Cass must have had better taste in music). The place was jammed, the Sirens pretty much do all cover songs and their version of Nazareth’s Hair of the Dog even had me singing along. (OK – I have to admit it – I did have a Nazareth 8-track bouncing around my car a long time ago).
After the Sirens show there was considerable debate on where best to continue the evening’s festivities. You could head over to the Magic Stick for the Dirtbombs, check out Blanche at the Lager House or see the Bomb Pops at the Holbrook Café. As the saying goes with my beloved Lions – if you have 3 No #1 quarterbacks – then you have no #1 quarterback. If I have 3 shows to go to – then I will actually see none of them. My first choice was the Lager House and of course, I was there too early. Therefore it was time to head over to the Magic Stick, but I thought that a stop at the Holbrook Café would work. Half way to the Holbrook Café, I realized that the Bomb Pops show might end early, like it did at Lili’s a while ago, so I headed back to the Magic Stick. By that time the Dirtbombs had already come on stage and the place was jammed. I did manage to catch the end of a great Dirtbombs show and waited the next day for the inevitable phone calls – “why weren’t you at the Blanche or Bomb Pops show?” – It was great!!!!
Well, I can safely say that the Blanche show at the Lager House, Bomb Pops at the Holbrook Café and the Dirtbombs at the Magic Stick were all worth attending – too bad I couldn’t do it all. However, I did find a quick way to get from the Brewing Works to the Lager House, so this will all hopefully pay off in the future. (like when I try to get from Ford Field to Joe Louis without missing half of both games.)
