Living in Detroit requires making too many tough decisions - like deciding where to go on a particular evening. I was kind of hoping to make at least 2 shows this weekend, but I totally wimped out and only made one. I have to admit that it was a great one, but I do regret missing the Bomb Pops at the New Way and the Paybacks at the Blind Pig. However, I did manage to drag my tired body over the Magic Stick and was amply rewarded for my efforts. It wasn't Halloween anymore, but I saw guys dressed like girls, girls dressed like guys and some in-between. It could only mean one thing - the Trash Brats were back home !!!
The opening band were the Puta-Pons from Chicago. With my typical lousy timing I managed to miss their set, but I tried to seek some forgiveness by buying a copy of the their CD "Return to Zero". Of course, the CD sounds great and everybody who saw them gave me the old "You should have been here earlier !!!" routine.
With the thought of another Lions home loss hovering over my head, I tried to forget the "New Attitude & same results" Lions and tried to enjoy the Queen Bee show. I quickly noticed that Queen Bee had added Jason (of the Fiesty Cadavers) as their new drummer. That certainly seemed to energize the band and they certainly played a great set for the appreciative (and fairly large) crowd. The other members of Queen Bee are Karen Neal (on bass) and Rachel May (on guitar). Since Rachel is also in Broadzilla, I was not surprised to see a large contingent of Broadzilla fans screaming along with the music. Queen Bee will be recording a new CD with this lineup in January and I am sure that it will sound as great as their live show was. (P.S. Broadzilla also has a new CD out that totally rocks - ordering info can be found here.
On most evenings this would have been it, but the show was just getting started. Queen Bee was quickly followed to the stage by everybody's favorites - the Trash Brats and they never sounded better! Fresh off their North American tour the Trash Brats unleashed their own unique brand of glam/punk/rock in front of a typically rabid audience. The sound was excellent and boys just went straight from one song to another without even stopping to catch their breath. The dance floor in front of the stage was filled with bouncing bodies that would not leave until the Trash Brats finished off with a four or five song encore. At that point life was perfect - my ears were ringing, I had a few bruises from getting to close to the stage and I had briefly forgotten that at 1:00 pm on Sunday I would sitting at the Silverdome one more time waiting for the inevitable Lions disaster. Well, I may have season tickets for the worst team in the NFL, but at least I can console myself with the fact that I got to see Queen Bee and Trash Brats and even the Lions can't take that away from me !!!!!
